Backup Storage

SYS and OVH servers both come with FTP backup space.

All SYS servers have 100GB FTP backup quota. All OVH 2014 servers have 500GB backup storage quota. Those with pre-2014 servers currently have 100GB FTP backup quota will be upgraded to 500GB in the near future.

The FTP backup space enables you to back up the data on your server, this space is particular useful when you need to reinstall the server and need to preserve data. The FTP backup quota is only accessible within the server. This means it is only usable when your inside the server and making an FTP connection to the FTP backup space.

With the new FTP backup protocols such as NFS/CIFS it enable you to mount your backup space locally on your server. The direct advantage is being able to manipulate your files as if they were on a local disk and thus to use all admin tools easily to carry out your backup.

In addition to the new protocols, you can increase the default 500GB backup storage up to 1TB, 5TB and 10TB.

You can find out more information about OVH backup storage here.

You can use the following command to mount the FTP as a network drive under windows.

Windows

net use x: \\ftpback-*****-***.ovh.net\ns123456.ovh.net

Linux

sudo apt-get install nfs-client

mount -t nfs ftpback-****-***.ovh.net:export/ftpbackup/ns123456.ovh.net /mnt

For new types of servers, they have a different naming convention:

mount -t nfs ftpback-****-***.ovh.net:export/ftpbackup/ns123456.ip-1-2-3.eu /mnt

Here we can see that only the datastore is listed but not the 500GB backup space, we need it mount it with:

esxcli storage nfs add -H ftpback-****-***.ovh.net -s /export/ftpbackup/ns123456.ovh.net -v [name of storage]

This will enable the storage to appear as part of the file system.
