For ESXi servers, the authentication for the vSphere client is done over port 443. This means that the server also contains an active web server for the hypervisor.

If the hypervisor’s web server doesn’t load up under the browser, we wouldn’t be able to authenticate with the server to manage the virtual machines.

As long as we have SSH access to the server we can look to restart the web services in order to bring back the web server without having to reboot the server.

This can be done with the following command:

/etc/init.d/hostd restart
